Reading Program for Cass County Indiana

A campaign to change lives in Cass County, Indiana by supporting parents as their child's first teacher,
to help them achieve their utmost by Kindergarten and first grade.

Jump aboard the
Reading Railroad!

The Reading Railroad is a program of United Way of Cass County. Community education is at the heart of the campaign, and key audiences include parents of young children as well as teachers, librarians, church leaders, physicians, social service agencies and others who work with these families.

"Three out of four children who leave third grade
reading below grade level never catch up."

The Reading Railroad Campaign wants all Cass County children to get a jumpstart on reading, so they're on track even earlier -- by kindergarten and first grade!

Funding to make this campaign possible is provided by generous contributions from Lilly Endowment, Inc., Indiana Association of United Ways, McTaggart Charitable Trust, United Way of Cass County, City of Logansport, Cass County Commissioners, NIPSCO and Diversity Dynamics.

The Reading Railroad’s
goals are to:

Educate parents about the importance of reading to/with their children for 20 minutes every day. Parents are a child’s first teacher. Parents can help their children realize success in school and later in life by reading with their children 20 minutes every day.
Collaborate with schools, churches, libraries and many other community organizations to help families find fun ways to get on board the Reading Railroad.
